The Guildford Arms receives birthday makeover

The Staff Canteen
Greenwich pub The Guildford Arms has been treated to a mini-makeover in celebration of its fourth birthday. Loved by locals and vistors alike, the elegant first floor restaurant and the more relaxed pub downstairs are now united by a less formal but equally fabulous menu by chef patron Guy Awford. The welcoming feel spreads right through to the sunken garden, which is heated in colder months making it a popular spot all year round and is described by Time Out as ‘spectacular… a contender for the best in the city.’ Guy’s distinctive modern British style has already won him a reputation in the industry, with the pub’s sister restaurant ‘Inside’ being recommended in the Michelin Guide and named runner-up in Time Out’s best neighbourhood restaurant. The new menus follow the tradition of imaginative use of British products, reflecting what is best for any particular season. The Guildford Arms pride themselves on making everything they serve from chutneys and oatcakes to pasta and ice cream, using local suppliers wherever possible. This includes drinks which come from Greenwich’s famous Meantime Brewing Company. Fresh fish comes courtesy of The Fishmonger while traditional butchers Drings provide the finest quality meat. Included in the new menu are butter roast quail or heritage beetroot salad, followed by pan-fried wild halibut with roast shallot mash, girolles and salsify or slow-cooked pork belly with Swiss chard, puy lentils and ravigote sauce. As well as the main menu there will be a streamlined mid-week lunch menu on offer, with starters for just £5 and mains for £10. A range of bar snacks such as salt cod fritters or pulled pork sliders are an alternative to classics like larger dishes of home-made fish pie or slow-cooked ox cheek followed by chocolate brownie sundae.
