Le Cheval Blanc gets three stars in 2016 Michelin Guide Switzerland

This year the 2016 edition of the Michelin Guide Switzerland has a new three-star restaurant, Le Cheval Blanc, located in the Grand Hôtel Les Trois Rois in Basel. Michael Ellis, Michelin Guide International Director, said: "Chef Peter Knogl, at the head of the establishment since 2007, has continued to develop his cuisine, bringing it to the exceptional level of mastery and technical expertise that is the realm of great chefs." 56-247927-cheval-blanc-2"From a classic basis, Peter Knogl has developed a real personality that is brilliantly reflected in his cuisine. His refined, gourmet dishes have subtle aromas that offer a burst of flavour and a unique richness. A meal at Le Cheval Blanc is a unique experience, worth the trip." The Schloss Schauenstein restaurant in Fürstenau and L’Hôtel de Ville in Crissier maintain their distinctions, as do the 18 restaurants awarded in previous editions. The 2016 selection also awards 13 new restaurants one star, including La Bottega in Geneva and Eligo in Lausanne, which offer international cuisine; Montblanc in Crans-Montana, Silver in Vals and The Omnia in Zermatt, in the Swiss mountains. montblanc1Among the other restaurants awarded a star this year, are Wirtshaus zur Säge in Flüh, Mammertsberg in Freidorf, Gasthaus zur Fernsicht - Gourmet in Heiden, Löwen in Menzingen, Einstein Gourmet in St Gall, Panorama - Cayenne in Thun-Steffisburg, Taverne zum Schäfli and Kameha Grand Zürich - Yu Niyo in Zurich. In all, the 2016 MICHELIN Guide Switzerland lists 95 one-star restaurants. Switzerland continues to be the country with the most Michelin stars per capita in Europe.

Michael Ellis said: "The selection made by our inspectors, who work anonymously and independently, once again confirms the high standard of Swiss gastronomy and reflects the country’s great culinary diversity." "The gastronomic landscape between Geneva and St. Gall, Basel and Lugano is interspersed with restaurants offering all kinds of cuisine, both traditional and more modern and innovative. Switzerland offers a wide range of styles of cuisine, which makes the country a great destination for gourmets.” Finally, the 2016 Michelin Guide Switzerland has a record number of restaurants distinguished with a Bib Gourmand, with a total of 119 restaurants, including 18 new ones.

For the last five years, the number of restaurants awarded a Bib Gourmand has increased by 50% (79 restaurants in 2011) - proof of the great popularity of this distinction among both professionals and the general public. The Bib Gourmand is awarded to restaurants that offer an exceptionally good menu at moderate prices (a maximum of 65 Swiss francs) The 2016 Michelin Guide Switzerland is on sale from 8 October and includes a total of 841 hotels and 994 restaurants covering all price and comfort categories. Among these establishments, 116 restaurants have one or more stars.
