James Cochran has announced he is leaving The Brave, months after it first opened its doors.

Chef and restaurateur James Cochran opened British bistro-pub The Brave on Essex Road, Islington in December 2024.

He began his culinary career at Wheeler’s Oyster Bar in Whitstable and later moved to London, where he worked at prestigious establishments like The Ledbury and The Harwood Arms under the mentorship of Brett Graham.

James said: "I want to thank the team at The Brave for allowing me the opportunity to create and develop the food menu for the relaunch of the pub, it's been a ride, but it's time for me to move on to other projects I have in the pipeline. More from me soon."

Michael Butt, who oversees The Brave relaunch project added: "We would like to thank James for his contribution to the pub relaunch project and wish him well in his future endeavours."

Dishes on the menu at the 50-cover restaurant include jerk spiced chicken scotch egg with scotch bonnet jam, Guinness and cheese toastie, Scottish razor clam ceviche, cheese doughnut and chocolate mousse with bay leaf ice cream.

Speaking ahead of The Brave's launch, James said: “We’re creating something really special here at The Brave. It’s not just a pub – it’s a place where people can enjoy quality food and drink in a warm, authentic environment.

“My dad used to take me to the pub when I was a kid and I have happy memories of that time, so this feels full circle for me. And, given all the love we received from customers and locals when we closed 12:51, it's a no-brainer for me to open something down the road."

Future plans for The Brave are yet to be announced.
