Chris Archer is the Head chef of Pentonbridge Inn, Carlisle.
Biography
Chris was appointed head chef at The Cottage in the Wood in 2014, his first head chef position, after previously working at Midsummer House (under Daniel Clifford), Winteringham Fields (under Colin McGurran / Germain Schwab) and the Yorke Arms.
His vast experience has positively impacted his cooking style and consequently food.
He describes his food as eclectic and dishes can vary from oriental inspired to a version of a dish his mum cooked for him as a kid in Yorkshire.
In 2016, Chris appeared on BBC 2’s Great British Menu alongside Tommy Banks and Mini Patel, representing the North East region.
In 2017, Chris left The Cottage in the Wood after helping the restaurant achieve three AA rossettes, before joining Pentonbridge Inn in Penton, Carlisle.
Since joining, Chris has won a wide range of awards for the restaurant including a Michelin star in 2023, and three AA rossettes for the restaurants.
The restaurant has been praised by food critics such as Jay Rayner and the Good Hotel Guide.
Pentonbridge Inn
The once coaching Inn re-opened in late 2017 under owners Gerald and Margo Smith, after extensive renovations. Creating a space to enjoy the fantastic produce Cumbria and the UK have to offer.
In 2019, the restaurant was awarded with the prestigious Ceaser award for best newcomer in the Good Hotel Guide, and have since retained our listing.
With a further editor's choice award for a pub-with-rooms, 2022. Simultaneous restoration of Netherby Hall and its walled garden, only 3 miles down the road, allows Head Chef Chris and his team access to the freshest of produce all year round.
A close-knit team work to forge a quietly luxurious experience for guests, pursuing excellence without pretension.
In January 2021, Chris and his team were awarded a Michelin plate in the Michelin UK & Ireland Guide 2021, retained in 2022.
Later that year Pentonbridge Inn received 3 AA rosettes. The AA awards three rosettes to "Outstanding restaurants that achieve standards that demand recognition well beyond their local area".
Pentonbridge Inn was awarded a Michelin star in March 2023.
