The Michelin Guide Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo 2017 was released on Tuesday, May 9, with Alex Atala retaining two stars for D.O.M for a second year.

No restaurants were awarded three stars this year and Alex Atala remains the only restaurant to earn two stars in the guide that covers the country's two biggest cities, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Alex is well known for championing the use of native Brazilian ingredients and his restaurant D.O.M. is also ranked number 16 on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list.

18 establishments were in the one-star category including three new entries for this year;  chef Pier Paolo's creative Italian restaurant Picchi in São Paulo, Laguiole, a site contemporary cuisine and colourful, modern decor in the Museu de Arte Moderna and Oro by the media chef Felipe Bronze in Rio which serves modern Brazilian cuisine and offers a list of more than 150 wines.

"Every year, our inspectors are surprised by the development of the gastronomic scene in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, which is constantly moving and where the offer is evolving very rapidly," commented Michael Ellis, Michelin Guide International Director." Chefs are continuing their efforts to move the standard of the offer forward by playing with aromas, textures, and flavours to offer customers new experiences while maintaining a particular focus on value for money."

The guide also sees 33 Bib Gourmand awards, including eight new entries. They are Bottega del Vino in Rio, and Bistrot de Paris, A Casa do Porco, Niaya, La Peruana Cevicheria, Oiu, Tanit and TonTon in São Paulo. Bib Gourmand, named after the official company mascot for the Michelin Group Bibendum, is a rating that recognises friendly establishments that serve good food at moderate prices.
