We find out more about the next batch of chefs set to take to our screens when MasterChef: The Professionals 2024 continues this week, next airing on Tuesday, November 5 at 9pm.

Introducing Jordan johnson, junior sous chef at Simpsons in Birmingham

Youngster Jordan, 20, was born in Birmingham and now works at Michelin-starred Simpsons. He is one half of popular social media duo RogueChefs, alongside Evan Holliday.

Name

Jordan Johnson

Age

20

Where are you from/where do you live?

Jordan was born and raised in Birmingham. He’s one of five children and currently lives at home with his mum and younger brother. Jordan’s mum, who is also a chef, moved to the UK from Jamaica in 1999 and his Jamaican roots often shine through in his cooking.

Current and previous experience

Jordan completed a catering course at University College Birmingham. After graduating he was offered a job at The Ritz in London, where he worked for six months. He then returned to Birmingham to continue his career at the Michelin-starred Simpsons, where he has worked for the last three years.

Who and what inspired you to become a chef?

“My mum is a chef and went to catering college, so I’ve been around food my whole life. After finishing school myself I knew I would follow in her footsteps in professional kitchens. Doing food technology at school only confirmed things, so as soon as I finished I knew I wanted to head off to catering college.”

How would you describe your style of cooking and any influences on it?

“I am classically trained, so all the French classic techniques and ways of cooking are what I know best. Working in a Michelin-starred kitchen has helped me to hone my skills, giving me the discipline and structure to refine my cooking. I love the classics but also enjoy including a touch of my Jamaican heritage.”

Why did you want to take part in MasterChef: The Professionals?

“I want to inspire the younger generation. I want to show young people like myself that if you put your mind to something you can achieve it and that anything is possible with hard work.”

OUTSIDE OF COOKING WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS?

“In the little time I have off, I run a private catering business with one of my colleagues. I also love football and used to play lots when younger.”
