Chef Tommy Banks has announced a new collaboration with Sunderland AFC to offer an 'exceptional dining experience.'

Banks on the Wear is set to offer an a la carte menu prepared by Tommy and his team of chefs.

Tommy has gained Michelin status with his two restaurants, The Black Swan at Oldstead and Roots in York, as well as being awarded a Michelin Green Star for his commitment towards sustainability.

He has also appeared on BBC 2’s Great British Menu twice, first appearing on the show in 2016 and again a year later making it through to cook at the banquet both times.

Tommy has been a lifelong fan of the hometown club in North Yorkshire and was also the youngest British chef to be awarded a Michelin Star.

The casual menu will include street-food style fare, including hearty pies from Tommy’s Pie Shop.

The experience will also offer picturesque views across the River Wear, the new city skyline and the footbridge, completing what promises to be the most exclusive and Michelin-worthy food offering in the City of Sunderland.

A spokesperson for Sunderland AFC said: “A passionate, lifelong Sunderland AFC supporter, Tommy was the youngest British chef to be awarded a Michelin star – he currently holds two, one each for his acclaimed fine-dining restaurants, The Black Swan at Oldstead and Roots in York.

“His award-winning pub, The Abbey Inn Byland, was named Best Sunday Roast in the UK in 2024 and he also holds a coveted Michelin Green Star for efforts with sustainable gastronomy, with most of his menu ingredients grown and reared on his family’s farm in North Yorkshire.

“Now, Tommy is bringing his passion for food and football together in a unique collaboration that will lead a summer revolution of premium matchday experiences on Wearside.

“With his personal attention to detail, Banks on the Wear offers a three-course à la carte menu curated and prepared by Tommy and his expert team.”

He said: “I’m really excited to be a part of this new, unique offering at the Stadium of Light. I grew up a Sunderland AFC supporter, so it feels surreal to have my name on a restaurant in the ground. My team and I are looking forward to delivering an exceptional dining experience, combining great food, with great football.”
