Hand Jigged Squid In case you were not aware, the Winter Squid is actually a seasonal fish. It can only be caught during the winter. This has irony, as squid is associated mainly with hot summer days reminiscent of Spain and Portugal. The squid has nothing to brag about when it comes to looks. Indeed, it has been the antagonist in many a monster movie. As ugly as it may be to gaze upon, this sea creature brings a delightful touch of the ocean to your dishes at an affordable price. Squids are a diverse group of invertebrates (there are estimated to be about 375 species of squid), the smallest squids are only about 2.5cm in long, but the largest giant squid recorded by far was about 20 meters long and weighed more than 1000 pounds, and that is about as big as two school buses! Giant squids are the largest invertebrates in the world. Hand jigged squid tends to be far better quality and much fresher. Squid which has been caught on a trawler or other large vessel nearly always has grit and sand in its cavity and has the outer membrane removed due to the vigorous tumbling effect of it being trapped in the nets for long distance over the sea bed. Flying Fish advice Any good fishmonger will be able to tell the origin of the squid. Also ask if the price per Kg is cleaned weight or un-cleaned weight this will obviously affect your portion prices! Cleaning squid can be messy business, so ask you fishmonger to clean it for you.
