World's highest dinner party abandoned

Sat Bains and his team have been caught in the Nepal earthquake during their Mount Everest highest dinner party world record attempt but they are all safe and heading home.

As we reported on The Staff Canteen on Thursday, under advice from the medical team on the Everest Expedition 2015, Sat Bains has had to leave Base Camp and urgently descend to under 2000m.

Sat's PR executive Elaine Spooner confirmed to ITV news that Sat is okay after the earthquake, and the rest of team involved in the charity world record attempt have moved to Everest's advanced base camp on the north ridge of the mountain where they are all safe.

She confirmed the chef is now on a flight home.

The chef also tweeted:

The rest of the team are currently stuck at Advanced Base Camp and are awaiting instruction from the Chinese government. Expedition leader, Neil Laughton said: "In the light of the tragic events unfolding in Kathmandu and on Mount Everest, we have decided to abandon our World's Highest Dinner party attempt and are returning to Base Camp.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this disaster and we will continue to raise funds for the charity Community Action Nepal."

Seventeen bodies have been recovered from the base camp on the south side of Mount Everest where hundreds of climbers are stranded following an avalanche triggered by the Nepalese earthquake, now the mountain's biggest single loss of life.
