Spain has one new three star restaurant to its name following the release of the Michelin Guide Spain and Portugal 2014. Madrid based restaurant Diverxo joins the likes of Akelare and Arzak in San Sebastian, Martin Berasategui in Lasarte-Oria and Sant Pau in Barcelona as the total tally of three starred establishments in Spain reaches eight.

Speaking about Diverxo, Michael Ellis, International Director of the Michelin Guides, said: “The chef David Munoz is without a doubt a rising star in the world of gastronomy, and we are sure that he has many wonderful surprises in store for his customers going forward.

“At the tender age of 33, he shows a culinary signature of remarkable maturity. David’s energy, and cutting edge concepts have been inspired by his travels in Japan, China and Europe, and his creations are rich in textures, flavours and aromas that can surprise and astonish.”

This year’s guide has 25 newly starred establishments bringing the total to 171 across the Iberian region, going up from 158 last year, which confirms the strength of gastronomy in the area. 19 new restaurants were inducted into the guide’s two star category and 22 are now proudly holding one Michelin star for the first time.

The Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal also lists 253 Bib Gourmand restaurants that offer excellent value for money with three-course meals served for no more than €35 in Spain or Andorra and less than €30 in Portugal, while still respecting  the quality criteria necessary to make the Guide. This latest edition goes on sale for €29.90.
