Team Denmark takes gold at Bocuse d'Or 2019

Winners have been announced for the Bocuse d’Or 2019 competition hosted at the Sirha exhibition hall in Lyon, France.

Team Denmark has won this year’s infamous Bocuse d’Or competition, arguably the most prestigious culinary award in existence. The winning cohort was decidedly Nordic: Sweden received the Silver Bocuse, and Norway won the Bronze.

As well as winning the Bocuse d’Or, Team Denmark - Kenneth Toft-Hansen, Christian Wellendorf Kleinertt and coach Rasmus Kofoed - received the prize for the best commis. Sadly, The UK team, led by Tom Phillips of Michelin-starred Restaurant Story, accompanied by commis Nathan Lane, coached by The Cross chef Adam Bennet and led by Bocuse d'Or UK President. Simon Rogan, did not win any medals in this year’s competition, ranking tenth of the 24 participating teams. 

Meanwhile, the Bocuse d’Or award for Best Theme on a Plate went to France, while the Norway team received the prize for Best Theme on a Platter. Morocco received the prize for the best poster, a category voted on by the public

Named after recently passed Paul Bocuse, this year’s competition honoured the late chef, as well as famous restaurateur and winner of more than 30 Michelin stars, Joël Robuchon.

The culinary competition, originally launched in 1987, was the first to host live food preparation in front of an audience, and is always held at the Sirha, one of the world’s biggest food and culinary arts fairs in the world. The biennial world championship puts 24 pre-selected national teams up against one another.

Unsurprisingly, France has taken the title six times, but others (namely, the UK) have not been so lucky.

Earlier this week, the Sirha also hosted the Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie,  in which the UK team came fifth - its highest ever ranking since the competition was created.
