Sally Abé celebrates as Michelin-starred The Harwood Arms named best gastropub in the UK
The Estrella Damm top 50 Gastropubs has named Michelin-starred London public house, The Harwood Arms - with chef Sally Abé at helm - number one on its 2020 list.
Restaurant Gordon Ramsay's chef de cuisine and Sally's husband, Matt Abé, shared the news on Instagram, receiving congratulations - amongst others - from Paul Ainsworth, Clare Smyth, Tom Brown, Adam Byatt and the team at The House of Tides.
Meanwhile Sally thanked her team, without whom, she said, winning the award wouldn't have been possible.
A marriage of fine dining's high standards of cooking with the comforts of the British public house, the gastropub is arguably to thank for a reinvogorated industry despite a nationwide decline in alcohol consumption and the smoking ban.
Their advent has seen British classics taken to new levels, with a number of them - including The Harwood Arms - receiving Michelin stars for their work.
The Sportsman, which held the top spot for the past three years, slipped down to second position, while among the top 20, The Crown at Burchetts Green made it to the 18th position, Tom Kerridge's The Hand and Flowers came in at number 12, Josh Eggleton's The Pony and Trap made the 8th spot, and The Star at Harome at number 4 and Lancashire's The Freemasons at Wiswell in third place.
With newly-appointed chef Michael Wignall at the helm, The Angel at Hetton Rose from the 50th to the 11th spot.
