Restaurants pull together in #RestaurantsUniteforNepal campaign
A single tweet from Sticky Walnut’s Gary Usher in Chester has sparked a wave of support from 240 restaurants, chefs and those in the hospitality industry for Action Against Hunger’s work in Nepal.
Under the hashtag #RestaurantsUniteforNepal, within 48 hours the support has shown the impact of social media and has resulted in hundreds helping to raise money and undertaking fundraising events across the UK.
Matthew White, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Action Against Hunger, said: “The restaurant community is passionate and incredibly generous, and time and time again come together to support our work.
“This time it started as a simple call for support on Twitter. Then, as the devastation caused by the earthquake in Nepal became clearer, it quickly escalated into over 200 chefs and restaurants committing to raise money over the coming weeks. And more and more continue to join our work.”
In the next month, restaurants around the UK are fundraising in a huge variety of ways, including:
- Sticky Walnut in Chester is hosting a fundraising night on 5th May, donating all their takings
- The Red Lion pub in Barnes, London is hosting a BBQ fundraiser on 8th May
- 180 of Fullers Pubs are taking donations from customers at the bar
- South West Chefs are uniting for a one off fundraising night on 17th May. Chefs involved include Dean Edwards (resident chef on ITV This Morning and Lorraine), Mat Follas (Casterbridge Restaurant and Winner of Masterchef), Brett Sutton (The White Post), Russell Brown (Sienna), Sam Moody (The Bath Priory) Romy Gill (Romy's Kitchen), Adrian Kirikmaa (Bristol City College) and Daniella Coombs (Bishopston Supperclub)
- Elsewhere, restaurants are asking for donations instead of tips and running raffles by putting donation envelopes on tables and entering anyone who donates over £10 into a raffle to win dinner for two at a later date
- Other restaurants around the UK are adding £1 donations to their customer’s bills and matching the donation
- Restaurants and chefs involved so far include; Aiden Byrne, MEATLiquor, Parkers Arms, James Durrant at The Plough Inn, Cross Keys Pub and many, many more!
What is happening in Nepal?
Action Against Hunger teams already on the ground in Nepal immediately launched an emergency response to help survivors. The situation is critical and time is of the essence. They had been present in Nepal since 2005, prior to the current emergency, with their focus on providing malnourished children with urgent treatment and follow-up care.
