Noma's Rene Redzepi launches new foraging app

René Redzepi of Noma, which held two stars in the Michelin Guide, is set to launch a new app to teach everyone about the fabulous world of foraging.

René called his new project Vild Mad, which means wild food in Danish. He created it in collaboration with his non-profit organisation MAD, which according to its website brings together a global cooking community with a social conscience, a sense of curiosity, and an appetite for change.

“Knowing your ABCs in nature, the flora and the fauna, the patterns in the landscape, and the rhythms in the seasons is as important, we believe, as learning math, learning to read, learning to write — especially today when people think cacao milk comes from brown cows,” said René yesterday when he announced the launch of his app at the World’s 50 Best Talks, which marked the 15th anniversary of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

The Danish chef was previously famous for his Copenhagen based restaurant, Noma, which held two stars in the Michelin Guide and was named best restaurant in the world four times by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants before it's closure last year. However, next week his new business (in cooperation with Danish chef Thorsten Schmidt) named Barr will be launched in the exact same location.

René is staying true to his concept of using local and seasonal food throughout the years and wants everyone else to benefit from his food philosophy by sharing his expertise on foraging with the rest of the world. The app guides its users through their environment and teaches them to recognise if and in which season wild ingredients are edible.

Vild Mad is available now on iTunes and the Android Play Store in English and Danish, but so far only features the landscapes of Denmark. Hopefully we can expect more countries to be featured in future updates.
