Michel Roux Jnr announces plans to go 'service included' at Michelin-starred Le Gavroche
Michelin-starred chef, Michel Roux Jr announces his decision to go 'service included' on all diners’ bills at Le Gavroche from the end of January 2017.
This will be marked on the bill and menus to make it clear that no further payment or gratuity is needed, and credit card slips will be closed.
Michel said that: “There is too much ambiguity between service charges and tips, so I have taken what may be seen by many in the industry as a bold decision to go ‘service included’.
“Hopefully others will join me in making it clearer for the public to understand what they are paying for, and this move will also ensure there is complete transparency for our front of house and kitchen teams.”
The restaurant currently operates in-line with the British Hospitality Association’s Code of Practice in adding a discretionary service charge on all diners’ bills. This service charge is not a tip.
Michel Roux Jnr recently came under fire for revealing that he used to pay chefs less than the minimum wage. The Guardian published a statement in November showing that some of his restaurant staff at his Mayfair restaurant were being paid as little as £5.50 an hour when the legal minimum is £7.20.
Michel recently apologised saying, “I am embarrassed and I am sorry.”
