Lima to host Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014
Peruvian restaurant Lima will host the second edition of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants on September 3.
Following a successful launch in 2013, the awards return to celebrate the gastronomic diversity and quality in Latin America. Organised by William Reed Business Media, the people behind the World’s Best 50 Restaurants series, the ceremony sees the unveiling of the 2014 list for the Latin America category as voted by over 250 industry experts from across the region.
William Drew, group editor of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, said: “Following the success of the first edition in 2013, we are delighted to be returning to Lima, Peru, for a second year.
“We will build on the solid basis established last year, aided by the warm welcome we received from chefs, the restaurant industry and the media, to produce a credible annual list and host a joyous celebration of the greatest restaurants and chefs in Latin America.”
Last year saw Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio triumph with his flagship Lima restaurant Astrid y Gaston taking the number one ranking, and Gaston himself picking up the lifetime achievement award.
Chef Alex Atala’s Sao Paulo restaurant D.O.M was at number two and named the S.Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Brazil.
Other winners included Enrique Olvera of Pujol in Mexico City claim the 2013 Chefs’ Choice Award while Remanso de Bosque in Belem, Brazil was named the one to watch.
Magali Silva Velarde-Alvarez, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) and president of the executive committee for the commission of the promotion of Peru for export and tourism (PROMPERU), said: “By hosting the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants awards for the second consecutive year, Lima asserts itself as the region’s culinary capital.
“This honour positions our country as an important destination in the tourism industry, yet we must continue working to remain a favourite for travellers worldwide.”
The evening in Lima in September will also include the presentation of prestigious prizes such as the Diners Club Lifetime Achievement award, the Veuve Clicquot Latin America’s Best Female Chef and a new award, Latin America’s Best Pastry Chef.
