Kikkoman has announced the introduction of their student chef competition which will target colleges nationwide.

Michelin-starred chef Simon Hulstone today launched the event that will see level two or three catering students invited to develop a starter or main course using Kikkoman soy sauce as an integral part of the dish.

Simon, chef proprietor of The Elephant, said: “I am delighted to be able to launch the Kikkoman Student Chef competition today. Competitions provide a great platform for young chefs to challenge themselves and I look forward to judging the entries.”

Student chefs will be competing to win a week-long work experience placement with Simon at his restaurant in Torquay, as well as catering vouchers.

Bing-yu Lee, general manager of Kikkoman UK, said: “This is such a fantastic opportunity for student chefs to develop a menu to be in with a chance of winning work experience at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

“We trialled the competition last year with Westminster Kingsway and the winning student, George Whitelock, actually now has a full-time job with Simon in Torquay.”
