Gordon Ramsay to receive £3.6 million from ex-business partner as ruling concludes 8 year legal battle in his favour
Yesterday, A New York Superior Court judge ended an eight-year legal battle between Gordon Ramsay and his former business partner at The Fat Cow Gordon Ramsay restaurant in Los Angeles, Rowan SeibeL, ruling that Gordon Ramsay should be paid $4.5 million (£3.6 million) in damages and court fee coverage
The pair founded the business together in 2012 but soon fell out. After it closed in 2014, Rowan Seibel attempted to sue Gordon Ramsay for $10.8 million (£8.7 million), alleging that he had "deliberately dismantled a trademark problem," formed a new company and struck a deal with the landlord of The Fat Cow to open a new Gordon Ramsay restaurant on the site.
'inept, self-dealing, incompetent and dishonest'
Gordon Ramsay issued a counterclaim, stating that Rowan Seibel was attempting a “fraudulent scheme to freeload upon the renown and acumen of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.”
He called Rowan Seibel “inept”, “self-dealing”, “incompetent” and “dishonest," alleging that he “begged to be included” in the project but “proved egregiously inept in its management.”
The celebrity chef's former business partner was deemed "not a credible witness" by the judge as evidence suggested that he had "fabricated evidence," "received kickbacks from suppliers" and siphoned money out of the business when it was failing, a spokesperson for Gordon Ramsay told Hospitality and Catering News.
The judge ordered that Rowan Seibel pay Gordon Ramsay's company $1.6 million (£1.3 million) in compensation, as well as 50 to 70 percent of Ramsay’s attorney fees, which were $5 million (£4 million), making the total payout $4.5 million (£3.6 million).
The GR US spokesperson said: “Mr Ramsay was earnest in his efforts to sever all business dealings as these problems with Seibel were discovered, and we’re pleased, but in no way surprised by the ruling.”
Rowan Seibel's lawyers are reportedly planning to appeal the ruling.
