George McIvor awarded OBE for services to catering and tourism
George McIvor, chairman of the Master Chefs of Great Britain (MCGB), has been recognised with an OBE in the King’s New Year Honours List for his outstanding contributions to the catering and tourism industries.
A stalwart of the UK culinary scene, George has dedicated his career to elevating standards in professional kitchens, mentoring the next generation of chefs, and championing sustainability in food service.
The Master Chefs of Great Britain, a prestigious organisation representing chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants and two AA Rosette establishments, plays a crucial role in advancing culinary excellence across the UK.
Under George’s leadership, MCGB has reached over 1,000 apprentice and student chefs annually through its Edinburgh-based masterclass programme. These sessions offer young chefs unparalleled access to world-class professionals, teaching them vital skills while showcasing the best of Scottish produce.
“Encouraging young people to discover the joy of cooking and learning about food is one of my greatest passions,” said George.
“Their natural curiosity and enthusiasm deserve to be nurtured, and I am incredibly thankful for the support of my peers who make this work possible.”
George's impact extends far beyond MCGB, donating to numerous charitable organisations, including Leukaemia UK, MND, SAMH, and Edinburgh Community Food.
His passion for food and hospitality has earned him numerous accolades, including the CIS Development Chef of the Year award in 2005. In 2006, he was appointed chairman of the Master Chefs of Great Britain, a role in which he has tirelessly promoted sustainable careers in hospitality.
Lady Claire Macdonald OBE, patron of the Master Chefs of Great Britain, said: “George’s recognition is richly deserved. His work over decades has elevated the profession of chefs, educated people of all ages about nutrition, and championed Scotland’s exceptional food quality across the UK.”
George's influence on aspiring chefs is profound. Many of his mentees have gone on to represent the UK in global culinary competitions, including the Culinary Olympics. Through The Full Range Ltd, the consultancy he founded in 2006, George continues to develop innovative training workshops that inspire chefs to use quality British, local, and seasonal ingredients.
“George’s career has spanned more than four decades, and his unwavering commitment to supporting farmers, local producers, and the hospitality industry is unmatched,” said James Thomson OBE, fellow committee member of MCGB.
“He has inspired hundreds of students, enhanced their careers, and raised funds for countless charities, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.”
