Match day hog roast on the menu at Jamie Oliver's Newcastle restaurant


Football fans will be well catered for once Jamie Oliver’s Newcastle restaurant opens its doors tomorrow.  Match days will see a hog roast gracing the pavement outside Jamie’s Italian in the all-new Monument Mall as part of the eatery’s plan to charm the city.  As well as offering a menu of fresh and tasty dishes to customers who want to sit in, senior head chef, Gareth Howard, says the plan is to offer something for passing Newcastle United fans as they make their way to St James’ Park.

Top chef accuses Tesco: 'If you care about our oceans, take this tuna off your shelves'


Tesco is facing the wrath of TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and environmental pressure group Greenpeace after stocking a cut-price brand of tuna linked to a controversial fishing method that can kill sharks, rays and turtles.

Pub numbers at new low as 890 close in past few months


The number of pubs in Britain is falling faster than ever.  There are now just 56,000 – a new low – after more than 890 shut in eight months, says the Campaign for Real Ale. It will release figures on Monday which are expected to show another increase in the rate of inn closures.  A crippling combination of rising rents and falling trade is blamed for many shutting. The rate of net closures – the difference between openings and closures – has been 26 a week in the past year.

Why Shanghai diners love China's first British restaurant


The people of China – or at least the 22 million of them who live in Shanghai – finally have a chance to get cultural payback for every time westerners have ordered dizzyingly inappropriate combinations of dishes in Chinese restaurants.  Last December, Londoner Harry Spencer opened what he claims to be China's first authentic English restaurant. It has seen scores of diners ordering dishes that don't strictly go together. "Quite a lot have insisted on combinations like prawn cocktail, bangers and mash, fish and chips and bread-and-butter pudding with custard all at the same time – and then eating it all together," says Spencer, 28.
