Nuno Mendes leaves Michelin-starred London restaurant Viajante


Chef Nuno Mendes is to leave Viajante in the Town Hall hotel, Bethnal Green, in order to become executive chef at André Balazs' new venture, the Chiltern Firehouse.  The Chiltern Firehouse is set to open in London's Marylebone in mid-February.  The Portuguese chef has fronted Viajante in London's Bethnal Green since it opened in 2010 and helped win it the title of best new restaurant in London in the 2011 Harden's restaurant guide. The restaurant has also held a Michelin star since the 2011 guide.

TV chef Raymond Blanc: 'British women are fatter than the French because they drink too much wine'


TV chef Raymond Blanc claims British women are fatter than their French counterparts because they drink too much wine, it has been reported.  The 64 year-old Frenchman placed the blame for the UK's comparatively portly females on a lack of food culture, eating too late and enjoying a few too many glasses of plonk.

Last year New York baker du jour Dominique Ansel was behind one of the biggest food sensations, the Cronut, a croissant/doughnut hybrid beloved by everyone from Victoria Beckham to Heidi Klum. Queues of people outside the bakery snaked round the block trying to get their hands on one, and there are still queues to this day.
