Chef Margarita Forés dies aged 65

Margarita Forés, voted Asia’s best female chef in 2016, has died aged 65.

The well-known Filipino chef and restaurateur was found unresponsive in a hotel room in Hong Kong. Her cause of death has not yet been determined.

Inspirational Margarita was a two-time cancer survivor.

Taking to Instagram, Margarita’s son Amado wrote: “Dear Friends and Family,

"It is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my Mom, Margarita A. Forés. Our family is mourning this unexpected loss, and we kindly ask for your prayers during this time. We will be able to share more in due time.

“With gratitude, Amado.”

Margarita was a prominent figure in the culinary world, celebrated for introducing authentic Italian cuisine to the Philippines and for her innovative contributions to Filipino gastronomy.

As recently as last month, Margarita welcomed Gordon Ramsay to show him around the Farmers’ Market at Araneta City in Manila.

Margarita previously worked as an accountant, before making her way in hospitality.

When winning Asia’s best female chef prize, Margarita became the first Filipino to win the award.

At the time, she was described by the panel as: “A true leader in her country’s restaurant sector, her dedication, culinary skills and pioneering efforts have elevated the dining scene in the Philippines and set a new benchmark for other chefs and restaurateurs to follow.”
