Bangkok restaurant Nahm takes top gong at Asia’s Best 50 Restaurant Awards

Bangkok based restaurant Nahm has been handed the coveted number 1 spot at the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014 Awards.

Opened in 2010, Nahm has now been crowned The S. Pellegrino Best Restaurant in both Thailand and the whole of Asia.

Australian chef David Thompson saw his restaurant ranked number 3 at the inaugural awards last year and gained global attention by placing 50th in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2012 before jumping up to 32nd last year.

China leads the way in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014 with 16 establishments ranked on the list, followed by Japan and Singapore who have 10 and eight restaurants respectively. There are 10 new entries on this year’s list including first-time representation from Korea in Jungsik (20th place) and Taiwan’s Le Mout ranking at 24.

Hong Kong’s Amber, which was ranked fourth overall, picked up the Best Restaurant in China award while the overall runner-up Narisawa took the title of Best Restaurant in Japan.

Tippling Club was a new entry for Singapore, placing 23rd while number 6 on the list, Restaurant Andre, was named Best Restaurant in Singapore for the second consecutive year with chef-owner Andre Chiang also picking up the respected Chefs’ Choice Award, voted for by his peers on Asia’s Best 50 Restaurants list.

Among the six Indian entries Bukhara was named Best Restaurant in India while Nihonbasi in Colombo picked up the Best Restaurant in Indonesia honour.

Other notable winners include Ivan Li of Family Li Imperial Cuisine in Shanghai which won The Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award while Lanshu Chen not only celebrated her restaurant Le Mout being named best restaurant in Taiwan but also the personal acknowledgment of the Veuve Clicquot Asia’s Best Female Chef.

Tenku RyuGin was named as the ‘One to Watch’, Fook Lam Moon in Hong Kong was given the ‘Highest Climber Award’ and Janice Wong of Singapore’s 2am was named Asia’s Best Pastry Chef for the second year running.
