Market Report - UK seasonal update 16 February 2015
This week's market report from Wild Harvest features Spring white truffles, mixed coloured kale and blood oranges as well as a whole host of other fruit and vegetables currently in season which you can see below:
Wild Mushrooms and Truffles:
For sure we are all chomping at the bit for Spring, but let’s face facts half of Turkey is under snow. Morels will need convincing it’s safe to emerge before flowering.
Portugal is having a fab fungal season however keeping air miles and prices down, variety and quality up.
All of the below are coming from Portugal save the trompette, which are from the US.
- Pied de mouton
- Grey legged chanterelle
- Yellow legged chanterelle
- Trompette
Winter truffles from Italy and the Perigord region of France are at their best now. Spring white truffles known in Italy as 'bianchetti' are flowing nicely.
Don’t be put off by the untidy appearance, many of our most prestigious customers exploit the excellent £:pong ratio.
The season normally runs just into April, so get them while you can.
Fruits
Here are some bullet pointed heroes from our late February fruit range:
- Blood oranges
- Seville oranges
- Cox apples
- Quince
- Lemons from Nice and Southern Italy
- Kaki
- Finger limes
- Keffir limes
Vegetables
Roots and brassicas rule the roost. Fairly mild weather is providing good quality and consistent supply.
Please find below just a few lines of note:
- Yorkshire Triangle forced rhubarb
- Black cabbage
- January king cabbage
- A range of adult beet varieties
- Castel Franco leaves
- Three cornered wild garlic
- Cima di rapa
